Quick answer

Every guide on The Badger Sett is written from published sources: government guidance, peer-reviewed research and established wildlife charities. Each page lists its sources and the date it was last reviewed. We use AI tools to help with research and some images, and we check what they produce. We never share where badgers or setts are.

Who writes The Badger Sett?

The Badger Sett is written and edited by Marcus and Ell, badger watchers since childhood. Marcus runs Local Web 360, which builds and looks after the site. We are not a charity or an official authority, and we are not affiliated with the organisations we link to.

Where do our facts come from?

We use, in order of preference:

  1. Official guidance and law: for example GOV.UK, Natural England, NatureScot, Natural Resources Wales and legislation.gov.uk
  2. Peer-reviewed research and national surveys: for example the national badger population estimates
  3. Established wildlife organisations: for example Badger Trust, The Mammal Society, The Wildlife Trusts, the Woodland Trust, the RSPB, the BTO and PTES
Where sources disagree, we say so and give the range, rather than picking one number. Each guide lists the sources it relies on at the bottom of the page.

How do we check our facts?

  • Every number, date and legal point on a page is checked against at least one listed source.
  • Legal information is a plain-English summary, not legal advice. We link to the official guidance.
  • Every guide shows a “Last reviewed” date. We review guides at least once a year, and sooner when the law, guidance or survey figures change.
  • Badger Academy lessons and quizzes use only facts from our sourced guides.

How do we use AI?

We use AI tools to help with some of our research and to create some of our images. Like us humans, AI occasionally makes mistakes, so we check what it produces against the sources listed on each page. AI-made images are illustrations, not photographs of real animals or places.

Why don't we share badger or sett locations?

We never disclose badger or sett locations. It's our secret, and theirs. Setts can be targeted by people who dig for or bait badgers, so we never name, map or describe a sett's location in text, photos or photo data. We remove location data from every photo before it goes online. Where we suggest places to watch badgers, we point only to organised watches run by wildlife organisations.

How do we handle sensitive topics?

Some badger topics, such as the badger cull and bovine TB, divide opinion. On these pages we explain what happened, set out the main arguments on each side fairly, and link to the official and independent sources so you can make up your own mind.

Links and independence

  • We link to other organisations because they do the hands-on work. Links to other websites don't mean they endorse us, or that we endorse everything they say.
  • Links to other websites are marked so that they don't pass search ranking to sites we don't control.
  • The Badger Sett is built and maintained by Local Web 360.

Found a mistake?

If you spot something that isn't right, you're more than welcome to let us know through our contact form. We don't bite! Please tell us which page and what you think is wrong, with a source if you have one.

We aim to check every report within 7 days. If we make a significant correction, we update the page, change its “Last reviewed” date and add a short note at the bottom saying what changed.
